DURHAM, N.C. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team was strong across the board Saturday (April 9) on its final day of competition at the Duke Invitational with six top-five finishes.

Ziyah Holman was strong in her 2022 outdoor debut at her signature 400-meter distance, as the three-time Big Ten champion won by nearly three-quarters of a second in 53.07, good for third-fastest in the Big Ten based on marks entering the weekend.

Though she likely still has faster times to come in her future, this performance is well within the projected cut-off for what it might take to advance to the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds later next month. The NCAA East Prelims are reserved for the top-48 individuals per event in the East Region and they serve as the opening round of the national meet.

Holman doubled back later in the afternoon for a fifth-place finish in 23.86 (+0.6m/s) over 200 meters.

Numerous Wolverines turned in top-five finishes in support of Holman's win, including a pair of runners-up in newcomers Riley Ammenhauser and Savannah Sutherland.

Ammenhauser finished second in the triple jump with a new U-M first-year record of 12.77m (41-10.75) (+1.6m/s), improving her own mark by 11 centimeters and moving up to No. 3 in school history. Leading heading into the final three rounds, she closed out with her 12.77m followed by jumps of 12.76m (41-10.5) and 12.75m (41-10), but could not hold the lead in the last two rounds.

Still, Ammenhauser ended with four of the six farthest jumps on the day, moved into a tie for No. 3 in the conference and bolstered her NCAA East Prelims qualifying positioning.

Running her first 400-meter hurdles race since winning the bronze at last summer's World Athletics U20 Championships for Canada, Sutherland opened 2022 with a 59.47 that put her within 0.02 of a second from Kate LaValley's 59.45 U-M first-year record in the event that has stood since the 2006 Big Ten Championships. It also puts Sutherland at No. 9 in school history overall.

Three more newcomers logged top-five finishes as BreeAna Bates got out to a strong start and took third at 100 meters in 11.74 (+0.9m/s), Aasia Laurencin ran the fastest 100-meter hurdles time of her young Michigan career in 13.39 (-0.3m/s) for fourth, and pole vaulter Brooke Tjerrild nailed a clutch third-and-final attempt at 4.10m (13-5.25) for fourth.

Tjerrild was joined in the top-10 by fifth-place Mia Manson at 4.00m (13-1.5) and seventh-place Jessica Mercier at 3.85m (12-7.5).

Michigan got two more top-10 field event finishes in the discus from seventh-place Corinne Jemison and ninth-place Amanda Schaare at 48.34m (158-7) and 47.03m (154-3), respectively, after they both finished top three in the shot put on Friday.

Michigan will head to California next week for the Mt. SAC Relays and Azusa Pacific Bryan Clay Invitational.
