Ferrari's Charles Leclerc was unhurt in a heavy crash in Friday practice at the Mexican Grand Prix.

Leclerc lost control at the Esses and spun backwards into the barrier, bringing his session to an end and causing a red-flag for barrier repairs.

His team-mate Carlos Sainz topped the first session, while Mercedes' George Russell was quickest in the second.

Russell's time was set on standard tyres when most drivers were using 2023 Pirelli test tyres in second practice.

Get brewing a giant pot of coffee, Ferrari. Charles Leclerc's car needs some serious work after the Monegasque driver's heavy smash in that second practice session.

We'll be back again tomorrow at 17:30 BST for what will likely be a very busy third practice running after today's prototype tyres test. Qualifying will then go green at 21:00 BST.

Get yourselves off to bed and catch on Saturday.

Valtteri Bottas and Pierre Gasly both punched in with 36 laps for Pirelli's 2023 tyre test.

Just like the first session, this second outing also won't be resumed because of the late red flag.

  6. Red flag

Hang on. Late drama. Zhou Guanyu is told to stop the car and pull over.

  7. Post update

Teams are wrapping up their running now. McLaren have put the development tyre test to bed and Esteban Ocon is done for the in the Alpine.

  8. Post update

Five minutes to go in this 90-minute session and Pierre Gasly has banked his 36th lap of the prototype test, while George Russell still sits at the top of the time sheets with a time set on the 2022 tyres early doors.

  9. Post update

There's only one man getting all the love and devotion this weekend and he drives a Red Bull and hails from Mexico.

Out on track, Esteban Ocon is not happy in the Alpine and asks his engineer to take a look at the engine as it sounds a bit troubling. "All looks OK," is the response from the pit wall.

  10. Post update

Sound the alarm. Pierre Gasly is the first driver to hit 30 laps on the test tyres. The Frenchman's quickest time so far is a 1:22.104, which is good enough for 10th spot on the leaderboard.

  13. Post update

Fernando Alonso is partaking in some Mexico drifting as his Alpine slips and slides across the 4.304km circuit. The two-time world champion has completed 22 laps on the mystery rubber and sits in 11th place with a 1:22.337.

  14. Post update

World champion Max Verstappen, Alfa Romeo's Valtteri Bottas, Alpha Tauri's Pierre Gasly and the Williams of Nicholas Latifi have all notched up 24 laps during this Pirelli 2023 tyre test.

  15. Post update

Some excitement. A radio message from Nicholas Laitfi...

"Is rain forecast?" asks the Canadian driver. "The sky looks ominous."

Williams reply that second practice should miss any of the drizzly conditions.

Mexico City has signed a new three-year deal to keep a Formula 1 Grand Prix until at least 2025.

The first race under the new contract with the circuit Hermanos Rodriguez will take place on 27-29 October next year.

Mexico returned to the calendar in 2015, after previous stints on the calendar in the 1960s and from 1986-92.

F1 president and chief executive officer Stefano Domenicali called the atmosphere at the event "incredible".

He added: "Every year the race attracts a large number of passionate fans."

In its latest iteration, Mexico has always been twinned with the US Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, which will be the case again next season.
