Red Bull's Max Verstappen headed Ferrari's Carlos Sainz by just 0.022 seconds in Friday practice at the British Grand Prix.
Williams driver Alex Albon was third fastest, with team-mate Logan Sargeant fifth behind Red Bull's Sergio Perez.
Mercedes had a difficult day, George Russell and Lewis Hamilton down in 12th and 15th despite a new front wing.
Lando Norris was 14th fastest in the upgraded McLaren that impressed so much last weekend in Austria.
Ferrari's Charles Leclerc did not get out in the session at all after the team discovered an electrical problem over the lunch break.
Back on Saturday at 11:00 BST
It will be a busy night ahead for Charles Leclerc's side of the Ferrari garage, while the British drivers will be hoping for a positive Saturday to make up for a disappointing Friday showing.
Join us again tomorrow from 11:00 BST as we build up to third practice and hopefully, an exciting qualifying session at Silverstone.

Carlos Sainz and his Ferrari finish second, 0.022 seconds behind Verstappen. Alex Albon once again shines and ends the session in third place, with Sergio Perez in fourth and Albon's Williams team-mate Logan Sargeant in fifth spot.
Max Verstappen and Zhou Guanyu have both been on the radio to say there are odd things rattling around or sticking to their foot in the co*ckpit. Good job the day is over.
Chequered flag
Friday practice is completed at Silverstone and Max Verstappen is the fastest driver in both sessions. This time the Dutchman tops the timesheets with a time of 1:28.078.
Yellow flag
Nyck de Vries is stopped on the track with a puncture near Turn Three. His engineer tells him to come in slowly.
Post update
This will be a blow for Charles Leclerc, missing all of the second practice session. At least Ferrari have one car running high up the field.

Carlos Sainz is being given some information on how other driver's race pace is looking.
"Hamilton's pace on the softs is a 33.6 and a 34.3," says his engineer.
"That is fast," replies the Spaniard.
Post update
Maybe a different set of tyres will do Mercedes some good? Lewis Hamilton is on the softs, George Russell is tootling around on the mediums.
Post update
The timesheets are stable at the moment as Max Verstappen, Carlos Sainz, Alex Albon, Sergio Perez and Logan Sargeant remain the top-five drivers.
The problems over at Mercedes are continuing. "I've got no grip," says George Russell. "Sliding all over the place."
Post update
Ouch. Lance Stroll is in the wars. "Stone hit my finger," he tells Aston Martin. "Pretty bad but I'll keep going."
Post update
An update from Mercedes on how George Russell and Lewis Hamilton are finding the home track so far this weekend: "Soft tyres on, but we're still a long way from the front of the pack at this stage of the weekend.
"Lewis and George both reporting low grip. Clearly more work to do to find the right working window with this Soft compound."
Russell is in 12th place, Hamilton is further back in 15th spot.
Team principal Toto Wolff called the Austrian Grand Prix a "bruising day" for the team. If Silverstone turns out to be another dud for the Silver Arrows, then that would be the knockout blow.
Post update
"Lewis trying a wheelie!" was how Formula 1 described Lewis Hamilton's dicey moment out on track earlier.

So, Charles Leclerc will just have to twiddle his thumbs in the Ferrari garage and watch team-mate Carlos Sainz collect all the data needed for tonight's debrief.
Williams have both cars running in the top five. Logan Sargeant is nestled in the meddle of Sergio Perez in fourth and the Aston Martin of Lance in sixth.
Track guide

If you woke up one day with the ability to drive a Formula 1 car like a world champion, would Silverstone be your first choice of circuit to do a hot lap around?
The lap record at the home of motorsport is held by Red Bull's Max Verstappen, with a 1:27.097 clocked in 2020.
Sergio Perez was asked in the press conference on Thursday is it corner names or numbers when he is debriefing with his engineer at the British Grand Prix? "Numbers, definitely," said the Mexican.
"We keep that consistency through all of them. They like to call them by the name but I think it’s better to keep that consistency."
Post update
Charles Leclerc is still stuck in the garage with that electric problem. Will we see the Monegasque driver on track this afternoon?
Lewis Hamilton isn't having the greatest time out on track so far. The seven-time world champion is up to 13th place but the floor of his Mercedes takes a heavy thud across the Silverstone track. Better come back in, Lewis. That will need looking at.
Post update
Lance Stroll is holding on tight to the Aston Martin. "My mirror is broken," says the Canadian. "I need to box. I've got a broken mirror. It just snapped."
